What are the education options, beyond home-schooling, under Ron Paul's plan?

Asked on March 5, 2012. Answered on March 5, 2012

As you know, Ron Paul is a firm believer in homeschooling.  While in congress he has introduced legislation to give tax breaks to families who home school - making it at least a little more affordable to home-school children.

Importantly, as president Ron Paul will not outlaw, or abolish, a public education.  Ron Paul's primary concern is the growing influence of the federal government in our children's education through programs such as No Child Left Behind and the Federal Department of Education.

Ultimately, Ron Paul believes that the best education is one developed at the state or local level, where curriculum development can be guided by concerned parents who want the best for their youth.

Finally, just remember that Public Education existed well before the Federal Department of Education was formed in the late 1970s.  If we, as a nation, educated our youth before its creation, we can educate our youth without it.

Some people say cutting government jobs hurts the economy. We see that these people will lose their jobs and have to find some other work. Wont that hurt the economy?

Asked on March 5, 2012. Answered on March 5, 2012

This question largely comes down to economic theory.  Since the great depression-era, the Federal Government has been relying on teachings of John Maynard Keynes, who believed in government spending during a crisis.  Ron Paul believes in Austrian economics, which teaches that government spending - including government employment - will adversely affect the economy.

In 2010, the Executive Branch of the United States employed over 2.7 million people.  As the economy absorbs those workers, some slow down will likely occur, however, in the long run if taxes are cut alongside federal employment, the private sector will see a considerable boom.

For example, as taxes are cut there will be an increase in personal income.  An increase in personal income will create job growth in two ways:

  • More wealth will stimulate more demand.  Producers will have to hire additional workers to deal with the increase of demand.  (Consumers will also be able to enjoy the products they couldn't yet afford)
  • Some people will (wisely) choose to save a portion of their additional income, by putting it into bank accounts.  Banks will then have money to loan out to entrepreneurs who will create jobs and to individuals to buy homes, cars, and other expensive goods.

I also hope that you will learn about economics in general, regardless if you find yourself to be a Keynesian or an Austrian.  As goes the old saying, "Knowledge is power!"

What would block granting Medicaid/Medicare to the states do in terms of benefits and cost of living adjustments?

Asked on February 22, 2012. Answered on February 22, 2012

Block funding those programs will both decrease benefits and increase the cost of living for those already enrolled in the program.

It doesn't make sense for the average tax-payer either.  As Federal funding goes down, state and local governments will be required to foot more of the bill.  Likely, these governments will be forced to increase taxes in order to pay their portion.  This means the average tax payer might even face more taxes than they did before.

Of course, this begs the question: why should Congress, the President, or any other governmental agency be in charge of healthcare when they can make decisions which can adversely affect the entire country?  Personally, I believe a country which relies on charity to serve those who are in need will be much better cared for than a country which relies on the bureaucracy.
